The Acne Diary Series: Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Correct & Cover Tinted Moisturizer (Medium to Tan) Review

4/27/2016

For my acne series, I am going to start adding acne products for review to see how it will react to my oily, acne prone skin.  So for my first review in this series, I am going to talk about the Neutrogena Acne Correct and Cover Moisturizer in the shade "Medium to Tan"..........

I am a big fan of the Neutrogena "Pink Grapefruit" line.  I have use the acne facial wash, the regular acne moisturizer, and the cleansing wipes in the past.  So when I saw the tinted moisturizer pop up at my local Walmart, I decided to pick it up to see how this would work for my skin.

Information from Neutrogena:

(Actual product)
I purchased this tinted moisturizer from Walmart for $8.99 and it comes it 2 shades, "Fair to Light" and "Medium to Tan".  It comes in a 1.7 fl oz squeeze bottle and it claims to be a sheer coverage tinted moisturizer.  Since I live in Texas, I use BB creams, light foundations, and tinted moisturizers in late spring and summer time due to the high temperatures here.  It's already getting pretty hot here (with temps in the upper 80s/lower 90s) so I was excited to see how this would hold up in the heat and how my skin would react to the moisturizer.  I applied this after I cleaned my face with a primer and finished with a blotting powder and setting spray:

(Makeup for the Day)
Using this the first time, I applied this with my hands only and to me, it was kind of hard to spread evenly throughout my face.  When I used it the second time, I used a flat kabuki brush with MAC Fix + and it was easier to apply and it went on smooth.  It didn't feel greasy and surprisingly, it dried to a matte finish (this product does not claim to be matte).  It didn't feel heavy on my face......it was very lightweight. One thing to note that it does have strong grapefruit smell when I first use it (all of their "Pink Grapefruit" products have the same smell) but it quickly fades away.  I have to say that I was impressed how it covered my acne dark spots and some redness on my face.  Of course it wasn't full coverage but this product never said it was and I never expect full coverage with a tinted moisturizer:

Throughout the day, I had to blot my face maybe twice to remove some oil but overall, it held up for about 6 hours before it started to fade a little.  When I tried it a second time with a full face (powder, concealer, highlighter, blush, and etc.), it held up about the same amount of hours as the first time I wore it. Again, I don't expect it to hold up for a full day (12 hours or up) due this not being a foundation:

To break it down, here were some things that I loved...........it gave good coverage for it being a tinted moisturizer and it actually covered a good amount of my dark spots and redness.  It also didn't leave my skin oily or greasy and I didn't experience any breakouts from using this product.  My skin also felt moisturized and it helped with some of my dry patches.  I really loved that it had Salicylic Acid in it to to help with my acne prone skin.

Now to the cons..........

The biggest downfall with this product is the shade selection.  It's only two shades....."Fair to Light" and "Medium to Tan".  Even the shade I picked up with a little light for my skin tone and I had to play around with it to make it work and not look ashy.  Sad to say if your skin tone is deeper than mine, this will not work for you. This to me has always been a huge problem with Neutrogena but I know they are supposed to be improving their shade selection with certain products.  Maybe if Neutrogena would approve their shade selection like Maybelline, it would be one of my favorites:
