My Top 5 Sleeping Tips & Tricks


For 2017, my goals are to improve my overall health with exercise, eating right, and drinking more water.  One important goal that I also want to improve on and one I think people kind of ignore is getting a good night's sleep.  Most people should be getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night but for me and other people, it can be hard to accomplish this goal.  So, here are 5 tips that I will be following to help me with my sleeping habits..........

1. Set the Ambience

The first thing I am going to be doing is setting up the bedtime atmosphere in my bedroom.  I'm turning off all the lights (I use a dim night light for a little light), turning off the TV, closing the curtains, and etc.  Less light and no more TV distractions will help me with getting to sleep faster and to be more relaxed.  Also, another great tip is to make sure you set your temperature to what's comfortable to you.  Being too hot or too cold will interfere with your sleep and can make you uncomfortable throughout the night.

2. Exercise

One of the benefits of exercising is that it can help you with getting better sleep.  I can personally say that on days that I exercise (I try to exercise in the morning or afternoon), I feel more tired by the end of the day which means I can go to sleep at a decent hour and feel fully rested by the morning. Another tip that I can add is that doing Yoga or stretching before bedtime can be relaxing and promote better sleep.

3. Drinking Hot Tea

Sometimes, you may need a sleeping aid to help you go to sleep and sleep throughout the night. What's great about Tea is that it can be a great sleeping aid and it's all natural.  I sometimes have the Celestial Seasonings Lemon Zinger Herbal Tea (Caffeine Free) before bedtime to help me relax and it also helps with late night cravings.  Here are some other teas that can be found easily at any food store:

And if you are the DIY type of person, you can even make your own version of some bedtime tea. One important factor in choosing a bedtime tea is to make sure that it is Caffeine Free.  Any tea that is caffeinated will keep you up and make it hard for you to fall asleep.

4. Play relaxing music or sounds

I love to play relaxing music when I am laying in my bed to help relax me and it also helps with relieving stress. I would recommend not to play anything fast pace since the goal is to make you relax and not pump up your energy.  If music is not your thing, try listening to things that are relaxing to you (For example, rain, waterfall, the wind, birds, and etc.).  There are many apps (and even YouTube) that can provide sounds that can help you relax and fall to sleep:

5. Set a sleeping schedule/routine for your children

This is the one that I have been struggling with since I have a toddler that wants to set her own bedtime.  So I am going to create a bedtime routine for her so it can help me with my night routine. My plan for her is:

-Bath Time
-Put on comfortable pajamas
-Brush Teeth
-Spend time with each other (storytime, a little playtime, bedtime snack, and etc.)
-Lay her in bed
-Use some of my techniques for her (lights off with dim night light on, close curtains, play soft lullabies, and etc.)
